But Where Are You Really From?

Project Overview
Third culture kids (TCK) are kids that are raised in cultures other than their parents' or the culture of their country of nationality for a significant part of their developmental years. Growing up as a TCK and moving to 5 different countries in my lifetime, I have often been asked “..but where are you really from?” and while this may seem like an innocent question, it can mean a thousand different things to a person that has grown up in between worlds. The book goes through the thought process of a TCK trying to answer this question, bringing up questions of identity, culture, familial ties and societal pressure. Overall, I hope to make the audience understand how nuanced, often times “othering” and invasive this question can be to a lot of people including TCKs and immigrants.

The aesthetic of this book was founded in the ugliness of the question which may seem innocent on the surface. The harsh colours, stretched type and striking imagery all come together to tell a visual story of what is going on in the mind of a TCK trying to answer this question. The book is second off  into logistical answers, family based answers and feelings based answers through colour. In addition to this, there are stories and thoughts from various other TCKs on this topic interspersed through the book to help the reader understand our view point a little better.
